Josef Haslinger was born in 1955 in Lower Austria. He is highly regarded as a writer of essays, fiction and drama, often based on the Austrian social and political scene, and has received many literary prizes in Austria and Germany for his work. His political thriller, Opernball, brought world-wide recognition and was filmed for television. He has been Professor of Literary Aesthetics in Leipzig since 1996. Josef Haslinger, born in Zwettl/Austria in 1955, lives in Vienna and Leipzig. He has been a professor of literary aesthetics since 1996, teaching at the Deutsches Literaturinstitut Leipzig. His novel Opernball was published in 1995, followed by Das Vaterspiel in 2000 and Zugvögel in 2006. His last book, Phi Phi Island, came out in spring 2007. Haslinger has received numerous awards, most recently the Prize of the City of Vienna and the Honorary Award of the Austrian Book Trade. In 2010 he was writer in residence in Mainz.
