Content
They meet by coincidence: a publisher and a dancer. He is taking the waters in the old spa hotel in Jáchymov, where he comes across the town’s horrific history. The dancer begins to tell him a story that has accompanied her throughout her life – her father’s tragedy. A star from the 1930s as the goalkeeper for the Czechoslovakian ice hockey team, all his success offered no protection from the tyranny of the communist regime. Then he was arrested and deported to the labour camps at Jáchymov, a uranium mine in a valley. He was granted an amnesty five years later, dismissed but terminally ill. There is nothing his family can do but watch his slow death. His daughter becomes a chronicler of an uncertain memory, from which she can no longer escape.
