He describes a dread of progress, lack of education and fear of freedom on the part of so many Christian Germans during the 19th and early 20th centuries. In contrast, the German Jews were passionate about city life and higher education; they made the most of the chances of the modern age. The lethargic non-Jews looked on with envy and resentment. Out of weakness grew first a desire for collective strength, then racial arrogance and in the end murderous anti-Semitism. Götz Aly enables us to understand the Holocaust as a part of German history.
About Götz Aly
Götz Aly was born in Heidelberg in 1947, attended the German Journalist School and studied Political Science and History. He is currently teaching at the Fritz Bauer Institute of the University of Frankfurt.
