Wisdom cannot be learned like a foreign language, we cannot force it into existence and it is not bestowed like an award. And yet there are ways to confront life with composure, watchfulness and humour.
The science journalist Hanne Tügel set out to investigate the many different ideas and teachings about the high ideal of wisdom and to road-test them for practical use. Be it Buddhism, philosophy or the Aboriginal Dreamtime, she explores the large variety of concepts from which we have been hoping for insight for thousands of years and looks at how they bring us closer to the dream of ‘the right life’. Along the way she meets a host of experts, including neuroscientists, coffee-house philosophers, musicians, writers and wisdom researchers – an exciting journey that makes each of us a little wiser.
