Professor Vitus Novak has been murdered within the ancient walls of Vienna’s Alma Mater Rudolphina University. And Leander Lorentz of all people, a friend of Detective Inspector Otto Morell, is supposed to have killed him. Novak was an archaeologist and one of several participants in an excavation in Syria, searching for the legendary treasures of Alulim. One of the others did not return from the expedition, and has been missing ever since. Is the excavation somehow linked to the professor’s murder? Morell rushes to his friend’s aid and comes across a web of intrigues, corruption and betrayal.
