Aliyah is 23 and has been on the run for years. She is living in cities she has never visited, using a false name to hide from her Kurdish family – she could no longer accept the double life, the secrecy surrounding her forbidden love to her boyfriend. She is ready to fight for her freedom and self-determination, and she has prepared in minute detail for her escape to a new life. But this new life is in danger, and despite her courage, Aliyah’s future is uncertain – perhaps for ever.
Aliyah is one of many young Muslim women in Germany to whom Güner Yasemin Balci has given a voice in this moving report on the price of freedom and passionate statement in support of a right to self-determination.
