Zara has moved to a new neighborhood, a new apartment in a high-rise building.
Her mother works during the nights and sleeps during the days – that is, when she’s not noisily working in the new apartment, drilling holes, fixing new lamps and so on. Zara’s first attempts to make friends with the local kids lead to nothing; she is told to go back to where she came from. Since Zara has inherited her father’s long, shaggy, black hair (her father being “an Indian”), this makes her think about Indians, and how they never feel lonely, because they have horses as loyal companions. Zara decides that since she has not been able to find a friend she needs a horse – or a pony, because, as her mother wisely interjects, it must be able to fit into the elevator ...
