Das Jahr der Wunder
The pursuit of happiness in the era of the new economy:In the middle of the nineties Christian joins a multi-media agency. A glamorous world is opening up to him. GFPD however is no ordinary agency. They ask for more than mere work, they are offering free play and expecting success. There is no hierarchal structure, but a general enthusiasm instead and the belief to take part in a medial revolution. Very soon Christian is part of a project connected with a loan and building association and the universe. Everything seems to succeed, enthusiasm is growing and private life dwindling. Gudula is the name of the efficient colleague who is showing him how team work really works. Grassei is ‚somehow' his boss and wants to know whether his work is making him happy. Wosch is also his boss, wants however rather to write a children`s book. In all rooms and on all levels eloquent Titus is roaming, always present and absent at the same time. Christian tries the impossible: to be successful and happy. He doubts and hopes and when he is just beginning to see his future in a bright light things are getting complicated again. Stress is increasing, the tension is growing. Enthusiasm is now necessary for survival, the moment of the presentation of the project is approaching...Rainer Merkel`s funny and sarcastic novel draws a picture of the perpetual motion of our service society and of the pleasant new working conditions it promises.
