Travels into crisis, or the ecstasy of helping
Rainer Merkel, who spent a year working in a psychiatric ward in Liberia for the aid organisation Cap Anamur, travels to three countries devastated by war. His reports question the attraction trauma and violence can have for people. Peace workers, trauma therapists and soldiers: they are all looking for a ‘limit experience’, which can never be intense enough. As an “Embedded Journalist” in the German camp in Afghanistan, Merkel is suddenly confronted by his own history, and his own trauma. It proves to him that the unhappiness of others is also our own grief.
