The Houseboat Detectives

Deadly Delight

The first case for the Houseboat Detective Agency.

At the start of spring, sometime in early April in Amsterdam, five notorious unlucky individuals find themselves on a houseboat, an old cozy barge. There, they establish a private detective agency (“The Houseboat Detective Agency”) to solve the cases the police can't be bothered with. Arie, the owner of the houseboat, is a former police officer who caught his wife in bed with his best friend and held a gun to his head. Maddie, who was recently sentenced to anger management training after defending her sister on the street with her Krav Maga skills. Jack, who cracked slot machines at home in London to make ends meet. Jan, who forged residence permits to help needy people. Elin, a native Swede and unsuccessful crime writer with a broken heart. On the deck, they grow tomato plants, enjoy the idyllic Amsterdam canals in lounge chairs, drink Irish coffee with plenty of whiskey and proper cream on dreary days, and watch old Miss Marple movies together in preparation for their first case. And it doesn't take long to arrive...

Amy Achterop alias Heidi van Elderen owes her first visit to Amsterdam to a forgotten street map and a hopelessly bad sense of direction. That was back in 1999. The author, who was born on the Lower Rhine in 1980, immediately fell in love with the city and has returned regularly ever since, often accompanied by her Dutch husband. Heidi van Elderen has also lived in Portugal and New Zealand, but has meanwhile settled down with her family on a small farm in Sweden.
