Lesung und Gespräch

Charlotte Gneuß (DE) presenteres av Marie Aubert (NO)

"Gittersee" (Gyldendal forlag 2025, translated into Norwegian by Merete Franz) is a coming-of-age novel set in Dresden in 1976. The novel received glowing reviews in Germany and was nominated for the German Book Prize in 2023. However, it also sparked a debate in German media about who has the right to write such a novel. Only those who experienced the GDR firsthand, or also voices from the West?

In the novel, Charlotte Gneuß tells the story of 16-year-old Karin Köhler, who is recruited as a Stasi informant after her boyfriend Paul defects to the West. Gneuß vividly brings to life an oppressive regime that makes it difficult to trust anyone but oneself, yet also makes the oppressed resourceful. The lack of trust between characters develops in an intriguing way throughout "Gittersee." The novel depicts a youth spent caught between the state's restrictions and family control -- and, above all, about adults who are too weak to protect their children. The Norwegian author Marie Aubert will be interviewing Gneuß. Both authors write about shameful topics such as difficult family relationships and loneliness. And both craft psychological interactions between people in an elegant and precise language. Welcome to a rare German-Norwegian author meeting! In conversation, you will meet: Charlotte Gneuß, author (DE) Moderator: Marie Aubert, author (NO) The conversation will be held in English. Don't miss the Norwegian-German program series "Auf dem Weg nach Leipzig" during this year's Kapittel!
