Pankaj Mishra was Philoxenia’s first guests 5 years ago, when he presented “The Age of Anger” at Kreiskyforum. One of India’s most important intellectuals he is a sharp observant of Western capitalism and society. According to “The Guardian “he is a “prognosticating pundit”. Not only has he documented the dark underside of India’s economic growth in his essays, with his “Age of Anger” (2017) he traced the rise of Modi, Erdogan and Trump to older ideas of discontent with western modernity. In his new novel “Goldschakal” (“Run and Hide” in the English Original), which Pankaj Mishra will present in conversation with Tessa Szyszkowitz, the author describes the effects of class, materialism and success in India and the West. It is set in the midst of India’s illiberal turn and points out how the country’s pluralist founding principles are betrayed.
