Germany's culture of remembrance (a topic set to be debated at Kapittel on Friday). However, regardless of the explanatory models used, it is an undeniable fact that freedom of expression, as we know it, is under pressure: Demonstrations are being banned, and artists and cultural workers across various fields are increasingly finding that their freedom to artistically address current social challenges is often constrained by practical political diplomacy and the government's well-intentioned attempts to calm tensions on both sides of the conflict's divisive axis. How do political conflicts affect young writers, intellectuals, and thinkers in Europe today? What are the short-term consequences, and what does the future hold for the freedom of the written word? How can freedom of expression be practiced when art is perceived as seditious and dangerous, even by government officials and institutions? You will meet the British philosopher and author Lyndsey Stonebridge, who will deliver this year's ICORN lecture later in the evening, and the German-British historian and author Katja Hoyer in conversation with the two critically acclaimed German fiction writers Charlotte Gneuss and Olivia Wenzel. Moderator: TBA The event will be held in English.
