It's November in Amsterdam, the month when Sinterklaas and his assistant, Zwarte Piet, arrive on their steamboat to travel through towns and villages distributing sweets until the grand Sinterklaas festival on December 5th. When Sinterklaas disappears without a trace, the holiday celebration is at risk of being ruined. Has Sinterklaas taken off, overwhelmed by the stress? Amy Achterop

Amy Achterop alias Heidi van Elderen owes her first visit to Amsterdam to a forgotten street map and a hopelessly bad sense of direction. That was back in 1999. The author, who was born on the Lower Rhine in 1980, immediately fell in love with the city and has returned regularly ever since, often accompanied by her Dutch husband. Heidi van Elderen has also lived in Portugal and New Zealand, but has meanwhile settled down with her family on a small farm in Sweden.
