Kangal

Nominated for the German Book Prize 2022

»The directness of Schentke's language and her ability to call oppression by its name are promising.« - nd, Mesut Bayraktar

»Anna Yeliz Schentke's debut is barely longer than 200 pages. But the accuracy with which her characters look at German and Turkish conditions is astounding.« ZEIT Online, Christoph Schröder

A novel about anger and longing, oppression and freedom, and about the question of who has power over our lives.
Dilek and Tekin are a young couple in Istanbul. Not only since July 2016, the city has been changing for them. When years after the coup d'état attempt Dilek gets on a plane years later, her boyfriend knows nothing about it. No one is supposed to know that she, whose name is "Kangal" online, will soon be landing in Frankfurt.
Ayla is surprised when her cousin Dilek contacts her; their summers spent together were a long time ago. And while Tekin starts searching for Dilek in Istanbul, Ayla is wondering: who is Dilek today? She wants to believe her stories about the country that is home to both of her roots, but is what Dilek fears really true?
Anna Yeliz Schentke writes fearlessly and honestly about friendship in unstable times. "Kangal" is a breathless and breath-taking novel about political upheaval, a life between two cultures and systems and about a generation in search: for a common language, for security and belonging.

»My highlight [...]. This is such a really exciting, fast-paced German-Turkish political novel. I definitely recommend 'Kangal'!« Deutschlandfunk Kultur, Miriam Zeh

»How politics come into our lives, this is what Anna Yeliz Schentke shows us in a story fueled by musicality and paranoia in equal measure.« Kathrin Röggla

»Two women who have much in common but whose view of the world could not be more different. About the thumb screw of state repression, deeply affecting friendships and relationships and causing destruction. A novel that pulls you in from Istanbul to Frankfurt. A must read!« Ronya Othmann
