  • Set in the period of transition between handwriting and printing
  • Elaborate interior design with vignettes from protagonist Clara's original manuscript

Ink, quill, and secret letters – a woman writes history

Clara is a scribe. She can do what hardly any women and only a few men could do in the Middle Ages - record words with pen and ink. And she recognises the power of words. When she falls in love with the married book illustrator Johann, she has to flee the Fugger city of Augsburg with him. In Mainz, they find work in Johannes Gutenberg's workshop. Gutenberg fears competitors who want to steal his ground-breaking invention. Because letterpress printing will change the world. When Clara discovers a traitor, she finds herself in danger. Will Gutenberg believe her? Can she count on Johann? Clara must find a way to write her own story.

Clara Hätzlerin really did exist. Birgit Herold brings her remarkable fate to life.
