Die dunklen Jahre

Austria, 1938: Jubilant citizens welcome Hitler. Well known images – but who were these people, what did they really think and what came next for them? The Viennese historian Kurt Bauer has bundled together innumerable diaries, autobiographies and letters to a breathtakingly real story. He relates why social democrats became Nazis, portrays the moving fates of people who had to flee persecution, and allows farmers to speak who had their own thoughts on the matter. A unique story about the entire Austrian population during the National Socialist era – taking into account forms of resistance but also the participation in violence and murder.
