Constantinopel - Istanbul

-         A historical journey through Istanbul from Justinian to Erdogan

-         Fuhrmann has lived in Istanbul for several years and considers it one of the most beautiful cities in the world

-         A treasure trove for anyone wanting to discover Istanbul and present-day Turkey

Istanbul is a city of great diversity and contradictions, full of history and stories. Christianity and Islam and Europe and Asia meet here, but so do rulers and rebels, most recently in 2013 in Gezi Park. Malte Fuhrmann takes this event, which he himself experienced, as the starting point for his journey through history, from Constantinople under Justinian through the conquest of the city by Mehmed II to Erdogan. He tells of the ghosts of the city, who are present in its old walls, of rebellious Janissaries, plundering crusaders, court intrigues and trade union demonstrations that ended in bloodshed. This book is a treasure trove for anyone wishing to explore Istanbul or understand present-day Turkey. As lively and riveting as the city itself.
