Rose Ausländer, born in 1901 in Czernowitz/Bukovina, survived the years 1941-44 in Czernowitz in the ghetto and hiding in a cellar. She emigrated to the USA in 1946 and moved to Germany in 1965. She believed that writing was possible even after the Shoah. Her oeuvre comprises 3000 poems.

Rose Ausländer

Rose Ausländer, born in Czernowitz/ Bukovyna in 1901, survived the Nazis in the Czernowitz ghetto from 1941-44. She emigrated to the USA in 1946, returning to Germany in 1964. She won many awards, including the Literature Prize of the Bavarian Academy of the Arts and the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Rose Ausländer died on 3 January 1988. Her collected works are published in 16 volumes by Fischer Taschenbuch Verlag.
