Power and Humanity

“I am less afraid of the challenges of this world because I have seen what human beings are capable of in extreme situations. We can all learn from them.“ Tankred Stöbe

What are the things that really count in life? Tankred Stöbe has found his answer. For years, he has travelled to conflict areas across the globe as a doctor. A clandestine border crossing in a jungle in Myanmar, days and sleepless nights in a cave clinic in Syria – on these trips he must give his all. And even in the most hopeless situations, he encounters selfless courage and deeply moving compassion. What he sees gives him hope: “We refuse many experiences because we want to feel safe. But testing your own limits pays off, no matter how and where you do it. Anybody can grow beyond what they think was possible.“

Tankred Stöbe

At the age of 33, Dr Tankred Stöbe gave up his job, his apartment and his car and applied for a position with “Doctors Without Borders“ in an attempt to give his life new meaning and a new direction. Seventeen years later, he has been to fifteen countries on nineteen different deployments and is far from thinking about giving up. On the contrary. Whenever Tankred Stöbe is not abroad, he works in internal medicine and as critical care specialist, and is the leading emergency doctor in Berlin. He was president of the German section of “Doctors Without Borders” and has been awarded the Paracelsus medal by the German National Doctor’s Association for his “attitude and his unflinching readiness to help others”.
