Thomas Mann's novel Der Erwählte (The Chosen One): Text and commentary in a box set
Der Erwählte is Thomas Mann's masterly retelling of the medieval legend of Gregory. Found guilty of double incest, his only way out is through penance: he spends 17 years chained to a stone in a lake until he is finally freed and elevated to the position of Pope in Rome.
The book of commentary by Heinrich Detering and Maren Ermisch presents the extensive genesis of the novel, which appeared in 1951, as well as Thomas Mann's studies of the medieval sources and the book's controversial reception. With its translations, glossary, bibliography and historical information, the commentary offers an ideal foundation for a deeper understanding of the novel.

Thomas Mann

Thomas Mann, (1875 - 1955) is one of the 20th century’s most significant writ- ers. He is credited with bringing the German novel to the international stage, and his multifaceted works have received a worldwide positive reception which has rarely been equalled. From 1933 onwards, he lived in exile, first in Switzer- land, then in the US. Only in 1952 did Mann return to Europe, where he died in 1955 in Zurich.
